– Versius Robotic Surgery – A First in Eastern India –

Kolkata, 28th October 2022: ILS Hospitals in Salt Lake has introduced a next-generation advanced robotic system in abdominal surgery for the first time in Eastern India. Versius is a next-generation Surgical Robot that offers enhanced precision for any kind of abdominal surgery. It was introduced at ILS Hospital, Salt Lake by Dr. Om Tantia, Medical Director & Head, Department of Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery,  ILS Hospitals  and Dr. Aruna Tantia, Director & Consultant Surgeon (Gynaecology & Obstetrics), ILS HospitalsMr Debashis Dhar, Group Vice President, Business Development, ILS Hospitals and Mr Subhranath Moitra, DGM Operations, ILS Hospitals, Saltlake were also present on the occasion.

The robotic surgery system has been introduced to minimize the shortcomings of laparoscopy. Improved visualization and greater dexterity are two major features of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. This emerging method provides far more technical advantages over conventional laparoscopy.

Robotic systems have 3D imaging, tremor filter, and articulated instruments. With this advanced equipment, robotic surgery is superior to conventional laparoscopic ones with significant improvement in visibility and manipulation.

“Versius gives surgeons the freedom of port placement, but with the benefits of small fully wristed instruments. The system also includes 3D HD vision, easy-to-adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions aimed to reduce stress and fatigue which goes on to help extend the careers of surgeons. The console has been designed to minimize physical strain on the operating surgeon through the option to sit or stand while operating, all in ergonomic pose. The open console design provides a clear line of sight to facilitate verbal and non-verbal communication between the surgeon and bedside surgical team. Versus is designed to provide the surgical team access to the patient all through,” said Dr. Om Tantia, Medical Director & Head, Department of Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery, ILS Hospitals.

“Upgraded efficiency through the usage of robotic systems is increasingly being explored the world over. This type of surgical approach is minimally invasive. Robotic surgery decreases blood loss and transfusions, and post-operative pain is significantly less. There is almost no chance of infection because human intervention in minimal. This translates into significantly better patient experience and management,” said Dr. Aruna Tantia, Director & Consultant Surgeon (Gynaecology & Obstetrics), ILS Hospitals.

The doctor duo has plans to introduce this new robotic surgery in other branches of ILS Hospitals as well.

Versius is a next-generation surgical robotic system by Cambridge Medical Robotics (CMR), that is used to perform minimal access surgery. It comprises a modular robotic arm with an endoscopic camera attachment; and up to three instrument bedside units, that can be connected to a range of wristed surgical instruments.

Robotic surgery can be used in any kind of benign and malignant abdominal surgical conditions, like gall bladder stones, hernia, appendicitis, fibroid, Weight Loss Surgery, tumour, and any kind of abdominal cancer. Robotic Surgery offers many benefits to patients compared to open surgery, including shorter hospitalization, reduced pain and discomfort, faster recovery time and return to normal activities, smaller incisions resulting in reduced risk of infection, reduced blood loss and transfusions and minimal scarring.

In this type of robotic surgery, the instruments are expensive and disposable. For this reason, robotic surgery costs are much higher than normal laparoscopy surgery.
